A crime that initially sent shockwaves through Toronto in 2021 is now making waves online once again, with netizens dubbing it one of "the dumbest" ever committed.
Toronto Life recently revisited the chilling tale of Oliver Karafa and Lucy Li, two young individuals whose pursuit of wealth and social standing spiralled into an unbelievable murder plot. Both from affluent backgrounds, the pair had a brief romance during their school days before rekindling their relationship later on. Karafa was now flaunting his entrepreneur status, while Li was carving out a career as an influencer alongside her sisters on TikTok, under the moniker Miaa Triplets.
However, their dreams of prosperity soon began to crumble. It was around this time that they crossed paths with Tyler Pratt, a supposed ex-cocaine trafficker looking to turn over a new leaf. This led to a business venture between the two men, with Tyler investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in a PPE-importing scheme - money that Karafa squandered recklessly, according to the Express.
When confronted, Karafa produced fake invoices, doctored contracts, and vowed to reimburse Tyler. But with his wallet empty, he concluded his only escape route was to remove the source of his troubles. This led Li and Karafa to hatch a plan to lure Tyler to a warehouse under the guise of a property meeting, claiming it was owned by Li's family, where they intended to carry out their deadly deed.
In the run-up to their heinous act, the pair purchased a getaway car and plotted its swift sale post-crime. They left a digital breadcrumb trail and borrowed a SIM card from an unsuspecting friend. To create the illusion that Li was home all day, they planned for her to don a blonde wig - one she'd previously sported in TikTok clips - when leaving the flat.
The fateful day of 28th February arrived, and Tyler, along with his expectant partner Jordyn Romano, turned up at the secluded warehouse for what they believed was a "business meeting". The criminal duo attempted to gain entry into the building, but the locked doors quickly shattered their pretence of ownership.
While Tyler was growing suspicious, Jordyn retreated to their car. A panicked Karafa pulled out a 9mm handgun, shooting Jordyn squarely in the chest before turning the weapon on Tyler, ending his life. Li and Karafa dragged Jordyn's body from the car, swiped both victims' mobiles and cash, and made their escape.
Back at home, they coolly deliberated their next moves until Li spotted news of a woman who'd been assaulted yet managed to drag herself to a nearby road and flag down a passing motorist to dial 911. The couple then embarked on a frantic tour of the city, discarding clothes, vehicles, and incriminating items like blood-stained joggers and wigs, all while being captured on numerous CCTV cameras.
Their flight led them to Montreal, where they boarded a plane bound for Europe, hoping to start afresh in Hungary under false passports. However, their freedom was short-lived as Hungarian police apprehended them shortly after their arrival. Back in Canada, Li was permitted to await trial under house arrest at her family's lavish mansion. However, she breached the conditions during one of her mother's business trips by going out for lunch with her sisters and then visiting her sister's upscale condo to use the gym.
The legal defences presented during their trial were as peculiar as the crimes they were accused of. Karafa claimed self-defence against a man he had allegedly lured to a warehouse. Li's defence, on the other hand, simply argued that she was too naive and superficial to comprehend her husband's premeditated plans - a notion the judge concurred with, stating she "may be the stupidest person in the room". Following jury deliberation, both Li and Karafa were found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder. They are now serving 25-year prison sentences without the possibility of parole.
